ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LJUBLJANA

When you come to Slovenia, you must come to Ljubljana. It's a Slovenian capital city and it has around 285 000 people.

How to come to Ljubljana?

By plane: Closest airport is Letališče Jožeta Pučnika. There you can take a bus until Ljubljana (main BUS station).

By train: The main train station is located right next to main BUS station which in very close to the city center (15 min by walk).

How to move around Ljubljana?

By BUS: First of all, you have to buy a URBANA card, which costs 2 EUR. You can buy it in main BUS station, on urbanomat or many other places. The single ride cost 1,30 EUR and it is valid for 90 min.

If you don't want to see really whole Ljubljana, but only the center I don't really recommend to buy it, because the city center of Ljubljana is very small but anyway buses don't drive in center district. So we suggest you to walk around.

In Ljubljana, you can also borrow a bicycle for only 1 EUR per week or scooter for 0,23 EUR per minute.

Where to eat?

Foculus
Is islocated close to the center. Their food is very tasty.

Hiša pod gradom
I highly recommend you visit them. This lovely place is located right bellow to Ljubljana castle. On their menu they have also very tasty Slovenian dishes.

What about GLUTEN FREE?

Cojzla
It's located in BTC. It's a little bit hidden, but they have really tasty only gluten free food.

Favola
They offer also gluten free pizzas. Look at their menu.

What about drink & dessert?

Nebotičnik - skyscraper
The view from up here is just amazing. It is so beautiful to see the whole Ljubljana in daylight and also at night. This I specially recommend in December, when there are so many Christmas lights.

Zvezda
They are in my opinion the best cafe in Ljubljana. Their cakes are so good. They also offer gluten-free cakes.

Cacao
Nice place right next to the Ljubljanica river, very tasty ice cream.

Lolita
Ambient is really nice. I will especially recommend it for girls. You should definitely try their pannacotta.
White hot chocolate

Vigò
They actually offer only ice cream, but not any ice cream. They have really tasty ice cream. Even there in very expencive, many times when I pass by, I can see a very long row of people in front who are waiting for their scoop of ice cream.

Čajnica Gallus
There offer a lot of diferent teas. They are very tasty. They have also some gluten-free cakes.

Romeo
They have probably the best crepes in Ljubljana. You can choose your own combination of fellings.

Tap water in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is one of the few European capitals with very high quality drinking water. For that reason there is no need to buy bottled water in stores while in Ljubljana and Slovenia.

Did you know that there are almost 40 fountains with drinking water throughout Ljubljana. Drinking fountains work from April until October. But how can I find them? Don't worry, there's an app called TAP WATER LJUBLJANA.

What to do in Ljubljana?

You can check our previously post Top 10 FREE things in Ljubljana.

In Ljubljana are also many museums and galleries. Every year on December 3rd they are all free because on this day we are celebrathing anniversary of birth of France Prešeren (our national poet). Here is list of Museums ang Galleries.

If you like animals you can visit ZOO Ljubljana. You can go there by bus number 18. There is also a BicikeLJ point, so you can go there with bicycle.

Not so far away from ZOO you will find a Koseze pond. All around the pond are very nice paths and there in a lot of benches for ralaxing.

If you like to start your day very early you can watch sunrise at Mount St Mary (Šmarna gora). You can go there with bus number 8. It is around 50 minutes by walk from Tacen.

In this post we will represent you top 10 things in our oppinion that you must see when you came to visit Ljubljana. In the end we add a few more spots and we also made only for you a special map of all the things described in this post. All things are of course free!

In city centre you can find:
1. Prešeren's square
It's a main square in Ljubljana and it's called after Slovenian national poem France Prešeren. On the eastern side of a square you can find a bronze statue of him and his muse.

2. Tripple bridge
Right next to Prešeren's square you will find tripple bridge. Why 3 bridges right next to each other? If you will be in Ljubljana before 2007 it will be logically. The middle bridge was for traffic and the side two for pedestrians as you can see on the picture below. Today city center is closed for all trafic so you can walk wherever you want.

4. Area right next to Ljubljanica river

Area betwen Šentjakob bidge and New square (Novi trg) is one of best parts in Ljubljana. We recommend that you go to the left side of the Ljubljanica river called Breg (the bank).

Those pictures were taken from Breg. At Breg you can find every Sunday morning a flee market.

5. Trubar road
Picefull street where you can find a lot of graphits. There are also tiny shops and some bars. If you like 'secret' streets we certainly recomment visit.

6. Old Ljubljana
Old part of Ljubljana is our best part of city. Best way to dicsover it is that you go from Mestni trg (City square), where you can find Town Hall and Robb well, against Old square and then continue on towards Gornji trg (Upper square).

On your way you will find a lot od tiny shops with souvenirs. There you can find also a lot of slovenian products.

7. Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana castle

On Ljubljana castle you can go in many different paths by walk. Our favourite is that one:

From the Old Square (Stari trg), turn into a narrow alley called ulica Reber, whose steps wind there way between the houses, gradually ascending towards the castle. After another 150 metres, turn left into the path Mačja steza, which will take you to the walls of the Ljubljana Castle in just a few minutes.

Check out a map in the end of this post.

8. Park Tivoli
It is only 10 minutes of walking away from city center. The easiest way to get there from center (Prešeren Square) is that first you go along Čop street, across Slovenska cesta, than you go along Cankarjeva cesta, pass Opera House, National Gallery and Modern Gallery. When you go past the underpass you are already initially at Jakopič promenade (Jakopičevo sprehajališče).

As you can see on the picture there are left and right different pictures. So there in an outside gallery.

Close to church you can also visit Plečnik's house, where is today a museum.

This street is full of greenery and if you catch also church in the background you can get a perfect instagram photo.
